Menopausal Syndrome

Hormone Therapy Causes Breast Cancer

On December 14, 2006, the media reported that the hormone therapy has side effects that can cause breast cancer.

Followings are some patients' comments on this news at

http://blogs.usatoday.com/ondeadline/2006/12/report_steep_de.html

It's Not Just Breast Cancer

The popular Hormone Replacement Therapy drug, Premarin, has been linked to ovarian cancer. In a report published in the Journal of American Medical Association, doctors report that women who take estrogen-only hormone replacement therapy such as Premarin for a long period of time have a higher-than-average risk of developing ovarian cancer.

Lacey JV, Mink PJ, Lubin JH, et al: Menopausal Hormone Replacement Therapy and Risk of Ovarian Cancer. JAMA Jul 17, 2002; 288(3):334-341.

Rodriguez C, et al: Estrogen Replacement Therapy and Ovarian Cancer Mortality in a Large Prospective Study of US Women. JAMA 2001;285:1460-1465.

A case-control study by the Department of Preventive Medicine at the University of Southern California School of Medicine reported that estrogen replacement therapy and health history was associated with greater risk of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. PMID: 1394165 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]

"I am glad there are findings like this being published. My mother did not have cancer. But, the basic problem with the medical field is this practice to give patients medicine that is being subsidized by the pharmacy companies so doctors can promote those products, whether or not the patient really needs it or even if it is dangerous. My father died because he was given a drug, under one name Pacerone, and I read online where there was many cases of people dying of this drug from organs shutting down from this drug. And, my dad died from his organs shutting down.

So, I am glad to hear someone is telling the truth about drugs.

In 1981, my mother passed away from breast cancer. She was 59 years old and had taken Diethylbestrol (DES) at the end of WWII to prevent a miscarriage. There was no evidence of cancer in her family medical history. I have questioned many medical doctors if there might have been a linkage to her breast cancer and the taking of DES. I have always been given very evasive answers. I am still waiting an honest answer...maybe this is my answer...
